Education and outreach have been central to the Sanford Lab vision from the outset. Sanford Science Education Center helps share the exciting science taking place nearly a mile underground.

The State of South Dakota and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford invested in the creation of the Sanford Lab in part for its educational promise. The Sanford Science Education Center was established to help realize this promise.

Formalized in the spring of 2014, the Sanford Science Education Center is a partnership between the Sanford Underground Research Facility, Black Hills State University and the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. The SSEC is committed to developing and facilitating rich, innovative learning experiences and preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and educators.

The SSEC lends support to Sanford Lab's Education and Outreach programs, BHSU's Underground Campus and the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center.
