Matt Kapust

Matt has over 15 years at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), translating the science that happens a mile underground into visual stories that spark curiosity and inspire learning. His work in science communication spans photography, multimedia design, user experiences as well as public engagement planning events—including a science festival that brings research to life for thousands of participants each year. Matt works behind the scenes to bring exhibits, presentations, and community outreach to life. “I like to focus on making complex ideas visible, accessible, and compelling.” 

Recently, Matt has been exploring how spatial storytelling, immersive technologies and interactive media—can deepen the connection to the amazing science at SURF. He is especially interested in how we might use these tools to tell the stories of science, engineering, history, and culture that define SURF and share those experiences with audiences who may never set foot underground.
