Julie Ewing
Director of Environment, Safety, and Health
After 7 years serving as SURF’s director of the Environment, Safety, and Health department, Julie Ewing continues to further the program’s standards while enjoying a home life packed with excitement.
Julie’s path to SURF involves a deep, personal commitment to safety and science. After graduating with a BS in Health Biology from Black Hills State University (BHSU), she initially wanted to be a doctor in radiology, but the field didn’t bring much enjoyment to her life. So, she started as the ESH Director at Croell, Inc, spending nearly 18 years there and developing the entire ESH program.
Her time spent working as an ESH director gave Julie the insight and experience needed to continue developing SURF’s safety standards as their new ESH director. Her favorite part about SURF is how ESH pertains to every single person.
“I get to know everyone, and we have an awesome staff,” Julie said.
Furthermore, she enjoys being able to lead others towards a safe and prosperous work environment, with coworkers describing her as a natural leader.
Julie and her husband, TJ, have been married for 25 years, and have three children, with two already out of high school. Though she grew up in Whitewood, SD, she and her family now live in an area between Spearfish and Deadwood. She likes to keep busy with rodeo, sports, and helping her eldest children with “adulting.”
Julie looks forward to her future at SURF, emphasizing her excitement about SURF’s safety culture.
“ESH is a priority at SURF. People take care of each other here, and I love seeing that.”
Above all, Julie’s favorite part of SURF is being able to mix both her love for science and safety at SURF.
“I get a front row seat to see the awesome science we do here, then I get to collaborate with operations who work to keep the underground a safe place to work.”
