Robyn Weis
Science Laboratory Custodian
With two years at SURF under her belt, Robyn Weis is anything but an ordinary employee. Born and raised in Deadwood, Weis managed the Steel Wheel gas station on Highway 385 before bringing her skills underground.
It was her gym friend and former SURF employee, Mike Sunich, who encouraged her to apply for a position cleaning the underground science areas. But this isn’t ordinary cleaning — it’s often cleaning dirt you can’t even see! Weis helps maintain SURF’s ultra-clean spaces and a laboratory-grade environment where even a speck of dust could interfere with sensitive scientific experiments like the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR.
Robyn’s favorite part of her job is getting to learn about the experiments happening underground, with her favorite being the copper electroforming lab. “With the copper growing, I’ve been in there and I’ve watched it and seen the steps throughout. I’ve seen what it starts out as and the finished project. You can actually see something come out of it,” she said. Additionally, Weis enjoys getting to know the scientists working underground, including graduate students and scholars from abroad.
“I just like the job. I like to clean. I like the people I work with—all of them—and I’ve gotten to know a few of them fairly well. It’s just nice having that environment to work in.”
Outside of work, Robyn and her husband enjoy an adventurous life full of hunting for Fairburn Agate, camping, and living with their two rescue pit bulls, Buttercup and Mia. Rescuing animals is one of Weis’s passions, having rescued four pit bulls and a mother cat and her kittens. She now has two barn kitties at her house. “So yeah, I like any animals!” Weis said with a smile.
