Exploring the Universe Through Light

The detection of light is a very powerful tool for exploring the universe, but what happens if something does not interact with light? Learn how scientists are attempting to study dark matter.
Level
Middle School, High School
Time required
~1 hour

From microscopes to telescopes, scientists utilize the properties of light to study objects that are not visible to the unaided eye. In this session, students will
expand their understanding of light by examining the spectra of various light sources using diffraction glasses. They will also learn how scientists use similar tools to study objects in the universe. Finally, students will be introduced to 'dark matter' and how scientists are using inventive techniques to learn about it.
