Event Description:
One of the main goals of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate is to find life elsewhere in the Universe. This is done through understanding extreme life on the Earth, searching for life through robotic exploration and looking for evidence through telescopes. The SHERLOC instrument on the Perseverance Rover has been in development for over 20 years and versions have been to glaciers, deep ocean, and extreme desert environments. Its mission is to identify minerology, detect and classify organic material, and seek potential biosignatures in surface material within Jezero Crater.
Luther Beegle, principal investigator of SHERLOC with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will discuss how to look for life on other planets and the ups (and downs) of trying to find life in the universe through robotic exploration. Plus, learn how early R&D work at SURF contributed to the making of SHERLOC technology.
