About Gary Sczerbaniewicz
The 2022 SURF AiR Gary Sczerbaniewicz is based in the Cincinnati, Ohio/Northern Kentucky area. Sczerbaniewicz’s work explores architectural spaces that evoke a sense of psychological unease, what he refers to as “the architectural uncanny.” Sczerbaniewicz borrows techniques from architecture, installation, sculpture and theatrical stagecraft to create full-sized structures into which the viewer is invited to physically enter and explore.
About the SURF Artist-in-Residence (SURF AiR) program
The SURF AiR program invites artists to create work inspired by SURF’s unique science, location and history. SURF is the deepest underground laboratory in the United States, reaching nearly a mile below the surface. It houses experiments in physics, biology, geology, and engineering.
