Photowalk general information

Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab) is inviting up to eight photographers, both amateur and professional, to a behind-the-scenes Photowalk of the laboratory on April 21. Photographers will be able to visit, explore and photograph experiments at locations on the surface and in underground research areas that are not usually accessible by the public.

The Sanford Lab Photowalk is part of the Global Physics Photowalk, hosted this year at 16 labs around the world, including four (Fermilab in Illinois, Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California) in the United States.

Advance invitation is required. Participation in the Sanford Lab Photowalk will be limited to eight photographers. Preference will be given to area photographers with established influence and engaged audiences whose ability to create compelling images is demonstrated by previous work. In an effort to inspire fresh perspectives, Sanford Lab welcomes photographers skilled in diverse ranges of photography, including still life, industrial and/or portrait photography. Sanford lab employees are not eligible to participate. Preference will be given to those who have not participated in previous Photowalk events.

The event is free of charge.

All photographers who receive a confirmation email for their participation should report to Sanford Lab by 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21. All participants must agree to follow the Sanford Lab guidelines and safety rules. Photographers will be escorted by a Sanford Lab Guide at all times. After a welcome and safety briefing, the photographers will be divided into 2 groups of four.

At each site, photographers will have about 30 minutes to take as many photos as they wish, using only equipment they can carry with them—no assistants allowed. Some areas will have cleanliness requirements that restrict equipment.

Participants in the Sanford Lab Photowalk will have the chance to submit photos taken during the event to a global photo contest. Sanford Lab will convene a jury to choose the best photos from Sanford Lab’s Photowalk, and feature them on our website, as well as on an international Flickr page. In addition, Sanford Lab will forward the top three photos to the worldwide Global Physics Photowalk competition, organized by the Interactions Collaboration
