Eight photographers selected to represent SURF in 2025 Interactions Global Photowalk

The select group of eight photographers, who were chosen by a jury for their excellence in capturing images at Neutrino Day, will now get the opportunity to visit the underground laboratory.

The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is proud to welcome a group of amateur and professional photographers to the facility as part of the Interactions Global Physics Photowalk. The event at SURF is just one of many similar photo competitions that are taking place at research laboratories around the world this year.

The second phase of the competition at SURF includes an exclusive underground photowalk, scheduled for Aug. 22, 2025. The jury selected photographers include: Adam Tomjack, Erica Lane, Josue R Laboy, Tia Erin, Anne Boyum, Paul Wishard, Riley Singer and Nikea Hoksbergen. See the winning photos in this gallery.

The winners were selected based on their photo submissions during the first phase of competition captured at Neutrino Day, SURF’s flagship science festival held the second Saturday of July each year.

A list of alternates, ranked by jury selection, will be included on the underground portion of the photowalk if any of the Phase 1 winners are not able to attend.

Those who attend the underground portion of the 2025 Interactions Physics Photowalk will get an additional chance to advance to the Phase 3 global competition. The top three images from SURF’s photo competitions will advance to the global judging phase.

The global competition includes photo submissions from physics laboratories across the United States, Japan, and Europe. The top winners from around the world be featured in CERN Courier and Symmetry.
