Hydrothermal pool in the Dallol hot springs, Danakil Depression

Believe it or not, extremophiles thrive in some of Earth’s most extreme locations. These environments can be super-hot, like a boiling hot spring, freezing cold, like Antarctic ice, or even bodies of water saltier than the ocean.

Scientists at SURF explore deep underground to find and learn about these amazing creatures and how they survive and thrive in tough conditions. Discover the incredible world of extremophiles and learn how they are helping us understand life on Earth and maybe even on other planets.
