What the Heck is Going on at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF)?

Deep beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) brings together scientists from around the world to explore some of the biggest questions in science. Building on a rich legacy of mining and discovery, SURF is one of the world's deepest and largest underground research laboratories, supporting groundbreaking research in physics, biology, geology, and engineering. Home to world-leading experiments in dark matter, neutrinos, and stellar processes, SURF continues to play a vital role in advancing global underground science research for decades to come.

The Institute for Underground Science at SURF presents a science talk by Dr. Jaret Heise, who has been involved in underground science research for more than 30 years and has served at SURF since 2008. He earned his Ph.D. in particle astrophysics from the University of British Columbia and contributed to the groundbreaking Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), whose discoveries helped lead to the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Dr. Heise has held leadership roles in major international physics experiments and now helps advance world-leading research at SURF.
