STEAM Cafe will feature a talk on the future of SURF at 6 p.m. on June 18 at Hay Camp Brewing in Rapid City

South Dakota Mines' monthly STEAM Cafe event will take place at Hay Camp Brewing (601 Kansas City St, in Rapid City) starting at 6 p.m. on June 18 featuring a talk on the future of SURF.

The talk titled, "SURF: 2035 and Beyond," will be presented by Mike Headley, executive director of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) and the laboratory director at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) 

The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead is at the forefront of research in physics, geology, biology, engineering, and more. Mike Headley, executive director of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) and the laboratory director at SURF, will discuss the latest developments, and look to SURF’s future with an ongoing expansion effort that will pave the way for underground science for decades to come. He will also touch on the newly formed Institute for Underground Science at SURF, the effort to foster multidisciplinary collaboration with partnerships at South Dakota Mines and universities around the world, and outline SURF’s robust education and outreach program in an ongoing effort to inspire the next generation of young people to take up careers in STEM and related fields. 

STEAM Café, an ongoing series of free informal talks by Mines faculty, staff and visiting experts, is a partnership between the university, South Dakota Public Broadcasting, and Hay Camp Brewing Company.
