Fiber-Optic Sensing at SURF: From Optical Extensometers to Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Fiber-optic sensing research at SURF has explored new ways to observe ground motion in hard rock. Dr. Wang will trace this work over the last 15 years from the GEOX collaboration to distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). These techniques turn optical fibers into sensitive, spatially distributed instruments for monitoring deformation and seismic signals. Seismology using light—its future is very bright.
