The Institute: Celebrating two years of scientific collaboration, impact, and discovery

The Institute for Underground Science at SURF is celebrating its second anniversary following two incredible years building meaningful pathways and strategic partnerships that foster scientific collaboration, community building, and inspiration for the next generation of researchers.

The Institute for Underground Science at SURF, established in December of 2023, provides a space for the global scientific community to shape the future of scientific exploration while opening doors for future researchers to continue advancing world-class science.

This video features scientists, educators, and students who participated in The Institute’s 2025 programs, showcasing the year’s accomplishments and highlighting the exciting future taking shape at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF).

In 2025, The Institute brought together particle physicists from around the world for the annual CETUP* workshop for five weeks of meetings, evening mixers, and pub talks. The Institute also continued the Deeper Talks lecture series and hosted the Quantum Partnership Workshop, the 18th International Conference on Interconnections between Particle Physics and Cosmology (PPC), and the Higher Ed Connections Workshop, all while welcoming the 2025 Davis-Bahcall Scholars for a once-in-a-lifetime science summer program.

In total, these six programs included 827 participants from 148 institutions across 24 countries – an extraordinary 121% increase in program participation compared to 2024.

The Institute is continuing this momentum in 2026, with programs and event planning already underway. See upcoming events on this Indico webpage.
