Roth and Campbell recognized for safety performance
Sanford Lab recognizes Roth and Campbell with October and November Safety Performance Awards
Sanford Underground Research Facility's (Sanford Lab) Safety Performance Awards are built to recognize employees who go over and above their normal duties. Although safety is everyone’s duty, many employees at Sanford Lab demonstrate above and beyond examples of the safety culture the facility hopes to cultivate. Sanford Lab’s Safety Task Force recognized Charles Roth and Jodi Campbell with 2019 October and November Safety Performance Awards.
Charles Roth, Sanford Lab facilities technician
Those who have ridden the motorcar across the 4850 Level have most likely had Charles “Charlie” Roth as a driver. In October, Roth was transporting a dewar of liquid nitrogen to the other side of the facility. After moving about 100 feet, a passenger noticed Roth stop the motor, get out and re-secure the dewar.
His passenger noted: “I didn’t see that the dewar was loose, but Charlie did. His situational awareness of all that was in his sphere of responsibility is absolutely commendable. He was paying attention to track conditions, the movement of the dewar, the lights, everything. I will gladly ride with Charlie again. He is looking out for me.”
"Charlie is a great asset to the underground operations," said Tim Baumgartner, director of underground infrastructure. "He is always willing to lend a helping hand with a smile, and he takes safety into consideration when transporting loads and people. We all appreciate his attention to detail and do not say thank you often enough!"
Sanford Lab’s Safety Task Force selected Roth as the October 2019 Safety Performance Award recipient.
Jodi Campbell, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory administrative support assistant
While walking outside, an employee noticed Jodi Campbell removing a volleyball-sized rock from the middle of roadway near the Ross Headframe. Though she was originally headed to her car, Campbell noticed that the rock had sluffed from the hillside onto the roadway.
The passerby noted: “The rock posed no risk to her car, but Jodi identified it as hazard to others and their cars. We often think of safety as only being direct risk to our co-workers, but it extends far beyond that. Her situational awareness of the rock and what it meant to others and equipment was a great thing to see. Plus, it was the right thing to do.”
“It’s no surprise to anyone who works with Jodi that she is always looking out for the safety and wellbeing of others,” said Josh Willhite, manager of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site. “Our team tries to always focus on safety, and Jodi’s action exemplifies this well.”
Sanford Lab’s Safety Task Force awarded Campbell the November 2019 Safety Performance Award.
