Community Engagement and Events
Through a series of events and programs, we share the exciting progress being made at SURF.
Building Excitement
In communities across the state, SURF builds excitement about the underground science experiments through public engagement, culture and the arts. Community engagement activities are supported through private donations to the SURF Foundation.
Neutrino Day
SURF’s signature event brings together science and fun in this all-day science festival in Lead.
Public Events
Through Deep Talks, Deep Roots and Ask a Scientist, we invite the public to learn about the science at SURF and the history of the Black Hills.
Čhaŋgléška Wakȟáŋ
The ethnobotanical garden at SURF honors the complicated history of the Black Hills, encourages learning across generations, and supports dialogue and reflection.
Artist in Residence
The Artist in Residence program provides opportunities for artists to create work inspired by the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF).
Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center
As a northern gateway to the Black Hills, the Visitor Center welcomes visitors from all over the world to Lead, South Dakota. Conveniently positioned on Main Street, the Visitor Center is your first stop in the City of Lead!
