How Hot is It?

Help students better understand temperature through a variety of hands-on experiences. Then learn how researchers study temperatures’ effect on water after traveling through different rock depths.

Curriculum module media

The SIGMA-V experiment at the 4100L. Researchers are looking at the temperature effect on water after traveling through different areas and depths of rock.

Imagine opening an oven door and feeling a wave of hot air escaping into the room. Then, imagine a work environment underground where elevated temperatures are not only normal, but constant.

During this presentation students will examine a variety of tools that can be used to measure temperature, learn why temperature and airflow at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) are carefully monitored, and discover how small adjustments can help regulate temperature in a complex underground environment.
