Education Impact

SURF's education team uses hands- and minds-on learning and 3-dimensional instruction to transform teaching and learning in K-12 STEM education.

Our goal is to use the excitement and promise of deep underground science and engineering to inspire and engage students, educators and the wider community through a variety of programming.

The Education and Outreach program supports educators to enhance their students’ 21st Century STEM skills, as well as inspiring students to consider STEM careers.

  • Professional development. STEM workshops, for both elementary and secondary educators.
  • Enrichment Opportunities. Programs for K-12 students include: visits to Sanford Lab, programs at schools, and videoconferences with scientists.
  • Curriculum Modules. Units were developed in collaboration with educators across the state to introduce students to STEM content related to Sanford Lab. Education and Outreach staff are interested in partnering with educators to develop additional resources and materials.
