Understanding Energy: From Campfires to Computer Chips
Energy isn't just a topic for the physics lab— Join us for an engaging 5-day summer experience designed specifically for K-12 educators looking to strengthen their understanding of energy's core principles!
This dynamic course will connect fundamental science concepts to real-world phenomena, bridging the gap from the mastery of fire to the quantum world of modern semiconductors and sustainable technology.
- Deepen content knowledge: Participants will strengthen their understanding of energy's core principles, including the Law of Conservation of Energy, energy transfer, and different forms of energy like kinetic, potential, thermal, chemical, and electrical. Explore how the general understanding of energy transfer allows SURF's scientist to probe the science behind the biggest mysteries of our universe.
- Translate abstract concepts: Educators will learn how to use every day phenomena—like the heat from the sun —to make abstract concepts like energy transfer concrete and accessible for students of all ages.
- Foster inquiry-based, three-dimensional learning: Educators will develop skills to guide students in asking questions, designing investigations, and analyzing data related to energy transformations, supporting a more student-centered and inquiry-based teaching model.
**Preference will be given to applicants who have previously attended an in-depth three-dimensional science instruction workshop
