STEAM Cafe: Into the Hearts of Stars with CASPAR
Join Mark Hanhardt, an experiment support scientist at SURF and a Ph.D. candidate in physics at South Dakota Mines for this talk at Hay Camp Brewing in Rapid City
Join us for the STEAM Café this month! December’s STEAM talk, “Into the Hearts of Stars with CASPAR”, will be presented by Mark Hanhardt, an experiment support scientist at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) and a Ph.D. candidate in physics at South Dakota Mines.
The fusion reactions that occur in different types of stars make up most of the matter we know in the universe today. But scientists don’t yet fully understand the processes various stars use to forge the elements we see all around us. Mark Hanhardt, an experiment support scientist at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) and a Ph.D. candidate in physics at South Dakota Mines, will discuss how The Compact Accelerator System for Performing Astrophysical Research (CASPAR), located nearly a mile below the surface at SURF, helps researchers decipher this complex stellar recipe.
Information for attendance/viewing
- In person: join us at Hay Camp Brewing Company, 601 Kansas City Street in Rapid City.

What’s the STEAM Café?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Hay Camp Brewing Company, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting have teamed up to create STEAM Café, which will be held at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at Hay Camp. Join us for drinks and enjoy a talk by a member of the Mines family. Collaborative programs, cutting edge research and historical perspectives on everything from gothic literature to the impact of motherhood are just a few cool things that you’ll learn about at these fun gatherings. The STEAM Café is a place to share new ideas, forge new friendships and grow as a community.
