It’s October 1st, and for the rest of the month, Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab) is going pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. Last year, our facility hosted multiple awareness initiatives and raised over $1,100 dollars for Foundation for Health, a Lead-Deadwood organization that supports local breast cancer patients.
This year, we are doubling our fundraising goal and increasing awareness efforts. Additionally, HealthWise will be focusing on early detection, knowing the symptoms, how to prepare for a mammogram and what to say to a cancer patient.
Employees can join the movement by wearing pink on Fridays, giving a freewill donation to the fundraiser and taking action to learn more about breast cancer. More details on awareness efforts and fundraising will come next week.
What every woman needs to know
To kick off this month-long event, we are sharing the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s What Every Woman Needs to Know resource. This article outlines what the different types of breast cancer screenings are; when to perform and schedule screenings for breast cancer; how to assess your risk; how to prepare for a mammogram; and what resources are available if you are unable to afford these life-saving screenings.
Why is this important? According to NBCF, one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. However, with early detection and treatment, you can greatly improve your chance of survival. We have created this resource to empower you with the tools and information you need to take charge of your health.
The Sanford Underground Research Facility promotes health and safety in the workplace, as well as healthy living and wellness for all employees. If you have questions about health and wellness, please contact a member of the Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Assurance Department or our onsite occupational health nurse, Laura Baatz at lbaatz@sanfordlab.org.
