SURF Foundation publishes 2021 Annual Report

The report outlines SURF’s science and education impacts, celebrates our generous donors

With the publication of its 2021 Annual Report, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) Foundation highlights key areas of impact, celebrates generous donors and provides transparency about the Foundation’s financial position.

“As we look back at 2021, I’d like express our deep appreciation for our donors and their strong support of our work to advance world-class science and inspire learning across generations. We’re excited for great things in 2022!” said Mike Headley, executive director of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority.

SURF has an ambitious goal: to advance world-class science and inspire learning across generations. As the philanthropic arm of SURF, the SURF Foundation supports that goal by building strong relationships within the community and opening doors for public and corporate contributions.

The Annual Report highlights the SURF Foundation’s four impact areas: investing in Scientists of the Future; going Beyond the Classroom, Into the Community; building the SURF Institute; and bringing these efforts together, United in One Space

To recognize the diversity of the many peoples who have and do call this place home, SURF is creating an ethnobotanical garden, Cangleska Wakan, as a way to better understand the Indigenous cultures of the Black Hills, or Paha Sapa. The Annual Report outlines the progress that has been made since the Sacred Circle Garden campaign was introduced in early 2021.

“We have raised more than half of our goal in a short six months,” said Staci Miller, director of the SURF Foundation. “We are looking forward to rounding out the campaign with additional support of the community, and I am excited about the impact the garden will have for the community and the Black Hills region.”
