Physics Experiment: LUX-ZEPLIN

Murdock Gilchriese joined the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in 1990 as a senior physicist and retired from LBNL in 2021. He was the Project Director for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter experiment now operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). Prior to this, he worked on the LUX dark matter experiment at SURF and helped lead LBNL oversight of SURF.

Gilchriese also worked on the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory proposal for the Homestake site. As head of the LBNL ATLAS group for 14 years, he led aspects of the design and construction of the ATLAS pixel and silicon strip detectors. He had management roles in the Superconducting Supercollider and one of its major experiments. After earning his PhD at Stanford University in 1977 and a year as a postdoctoral fellow for the University of Pennsylvania, he spent a decade doing research as a faculty member at Cornell University.
