Professor Heuer is an experimental particle physicist and most of his scientific work has been related to the study of electron-positron reactions, development of experimental techniques, as well as construction and running of large detector systems. Prof. Heuer was the CERN Director-General from January 2009 to December 2015.
From April 2016 to April 2018, he was President of the German Physical Society. He is President of the Council of SESAME (Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) and Chair of the European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors. Prof. Heuer has published over 500 scientific papers, and holds many Honorary Degrees from universities in Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada.
