Experiments

From cutting-edge research in physics to breakthroughs in biology to pioneering geothermal research, SURF hosts experiments that push the frontier.

LUX-ZEPLIN

LZ is 100x more sensitive to finding signals from dark matter particles than its predecessor, the Large Underground Xenon experiment (LUX).

Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

DUNE comprises state-of-the-art particle detectors: one at Fermilab and one deep underground at SURF. The far detector will be the largest of its type ever built and record neutrino interactions with unprecedented precision.

  • Majorana Demonstrator

The Majorana Demonstrator investigated the imbalance of matter and antimatter in the universe—and they mystery of why we exist at all.

    -

  • LUX

When LUX completed its 300-live-day run in May of 2016, the world learned LUX was even more sensitive than previously determined.

    -

  • Davis Experiment

In 1965, a chemist by the name of Ray Davis began an experiment to detect neutrinos coming from the sun. In 2002 he would be awarded a share of the Nobel Prize for his work.

  • Transparent Earth

A seismic observatory deep underground has sensors at four locations. Transparent Earth could help fulfill broad goals for geophysical monitoring of the earth.
