SURF User Association opens executive committee nominations

Association members are encouraged to apply or nominate a colleague before Feb. 20, 2026.

The SURF User Association (SUA) promotes open discussion on relevant topics for researchers performing science at SURF.  The association also promotes a sense of community among SURF researchers; articulates and promotes the scientific case for underground science and its significance to society; and provides a means for SURF management to inform users on issues including current and future plans for the facility.  Learn more about the SUA here.

Elections for five members of the SURF User Association Executive Committee (SUA EC) will be held in the coming weeks. The SUA EC is transitioning to a uniform three-year term length for all SUA EC members. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will serve three-year terms, while the next three highest vote-getters will serve two-year terms. All terms will begin in March 2026. Of the five elected members, at least two must represent the biology, geoscience, and engineering communities.

SURF User Association members may nominate fellow members to serve as candidates for these positions. In addition, the Executive Committee will identify candidates as needed to ensure a complete ballot. Multiple nominations, including self-nominations, are welcome.

Please send your nominations for these positions by 11:59 PM Mountain Standard Time on February 20th to the SUA EC Secretary, Mark Hanhardt, at mhanhardt@sanfordlab.org using the subject line SUA EC Nomination.

Election ballots will be sent to members via Qualtrics in early March, after the slate of candidates has been finalized.
